In the world tea consumption market where black tea consumption is the focus, Sri Lanka and its Ceylon black tea are favored by major tea consuming countries.

Sri Lanka is in the South Asia region of Asia. It is an island country in the Indian Ocean with a land area of nearly 66,000 square kilometers. It is known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. Sri Lanka is a traditional agricultural country.

The natural conditions of Sri Lanka are very suitable for the cultivation of tea trees. The topography of the island is high in the middle and low on the four sides. The central part of the island is mountainous and hilly, which is suitable for tea tree planting. Sri Lanka has a tropical monsoon climate, with high temperatures all year round and sufficient heat. Since the island is surrounded by oceans, both the southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon can bring precipitation and sufficient moisture. In addition, the large temperature difference between day and night has made Sri Lanka’s world-famous black tea. Sri Lanka’s Ceylon black tea, our country’s Keemun black tea and India’s Darjeeling black tea are known as the “three most highly fragrant black teas in the world”.

Most of the soil in Sri Lanka has relatively high nutrient content and high productivity, and there is almost no completely useless land. In terms of tea tree cultivation, most tea gardens in Sri Lanka adopt ecological planting methods. In other words, a variety of plants are used to form a small ecosystem. In each small tea plot, taller trees are planted to serve as sunshades for the tea trees. At the same time, mugwort is planted around the tea plot to repel insects, and other herbs are used to improve the soil and ensure soil fertility.

Sri Lanka was formerly known as “Ceylon”, and the local black tea was therefore called “Ceylon black tea”. It is known as “the cleanest black tea in the world” and “a gift to the world”. Sri Lanka’s tea was introduced from India by the Englishman Jim Taylor in 1867. It has been more than 150 years ago. Although the history is not long, due to the superior natural conditions, the tea produced is of high quality. There are six main black tea producing areas in Sri Lanka, with the annual tea production reaching 250,000 tons.

Sri Lanka’s tea is mainly exported to Russia, the Middle East, the European Union, and Asian countries.
