In our country’s tea market, tea is divided into green organic tea, green food tea, pollution-free tea and general conventional tea according to quality. Green organic tea is a pollution-free, purely natural tea, which is the representative of the highest quality in tea.

In recent years, with the deterioration of the global ecological environment and the improvement of living standards, people’s awareness of green consumption has been increasing, and the demand for organic food has continued to grow. To adapt to this consumption trend, global organic agriculture is taking off. Tea has always been considered a healthy drink due to its health, wellness, and medicinal value. Organic tea emerged as the times require in the organic trend of global agricultural production.

Organic tea was first produced in Sri Lanka in 1983. Later, tea-producing countries such as India, Tanzania, Japan, Kenya, and China began production. In the autumn of 1989, organic tea was put on the British market for sale. It has been developed for nearly 30 years. Some tea gardens in China are in mountainous and mid-mountainous areas, far away from urban and industrial pollution, with superior ecological environment and inherent advantages in producing organic tea. The organic tea produced in China is mainly sold to the international market, and the structure of tea has a prominent contradiction with the consumption structure of the international market. How to open the international market is an urgent problem that needs to be solved for the current development of China’s organic tea.

Overview of global organic food consumption demand

After entering the 21st century, global consumption of organic food and beverages has been growing rapidly. Global organic food consumption is mainly concentrated in developed countries or regions such as Europe, North America, and Japan. In these regions, people’s acceptance of organic food is relatively high and the market demand is stronger.

At present, the United States, Europe, and Japan occupy the vast majority of the world’s organic food market. The EU is the world’s largest organic food and beverage consumer market. Germany is the EU’s largest organic food consumer, accounting for 32% of the EU’s organic food market share. . Looking at a single country, the United States has the world’s largest organic food market, with consumption reaching 17.835 billion euros, followed by Germany and France, whose organic food sales reached 5.8 billion euros and 3 billion euros respectively.

Organic tea consumption in key organic food consumption markets

Currently, organic tea is mainly sold to Western Europe, the United States, Japan, etc. In European and American countries, organic food sales account for 5% to 10% of total food sales, while organic tea accounts for about 1%, indicating a very large market growth space. But these areas do not produce tea, which provides huge market opportunities for organic tea producing and exporting countries.

European Union market

The European Union is one of the earliest and fastest developing regions of organic agriculture. People have a relatively high degree of acceptance of the concept of organic agriculture, and the organic food market is developing extremely rapidly. However, these countries do not produce tea and must rely on imports, which provides huge market opportunities for the export of organic tea from tea-producing countries such as China. The European market has a large demand for tea. In 2006, the total tea consumption in the EU was 246,000 tons, of which organic tea consumption was about 10,000 tons. The UK is the largest tea consumer and importer. 77% of British people like to drink tea, and the average annual consumption is basically stable at more than 130,000 tons. Germany and France are also important tea consuming countries, with average annual consumption of 22,000 tons and 14,000 tons respectively.

According to information provided by relevant EU organic certification agencies and traders, the EU’s organic tea market is in a growth stage. Currently, organic tea is in short supply, with prices 20% to 30% higher than ordinary tea. From the perspective of development trends, the current total tea consumption in the EU market has basically stabilized, but the market share of organic tea still has space for growth.

American market

The United States is an emerging major tea consumer in the world, and its average annual tea consumption has reached 110,000 tons. Currently, organic tea consumption in the United States accounts for more than 10% of the total tea market, and its market share of organic beverages is approximately 6.5%. A survey of American consumers shows that more than 55% of those surveyed know about organic tea, and more than 55% of them have purchased it before. Among those who have purchased it, 70% of consumers said they would buy it in the future. ; 36% of tea consumers said they prefer organic tea to traditional tea, and 60% of U.S. consumers said they like tea with a certain fruity flavor, and their demand for flavor is also diverse.

More than 65% of U.S. consumers expressed their unwillingness to buy organic tea at a price that exceeds 50% of the price of ordinary tea. This shows that organic tea consumers in the U.S. market are more sensitive to the price of organic tea. However, due to the high acceptance of the organic concept, the market demand for organic tea is still very strong. Due to the excellent quality and health benefits of organic tea, the consumer base of organic tea in the United States is also constantly expanding.

Japanese market

Japan is the only tea-producing country among the six major organic food consuming countries. It has a good tea consumption base, with annual tea consumption of about 140,000 tons. Japan is Asia’s largest organic food consumer market, and consumers are increasingly demanding organic food and are willing to bear higher prices.

According to the survey, Japanese consumers’ awareness of organic tea is as high as 83%, and the age of the consumer group is mainly concentrated in 30-40 years old; 91% of consumers said that quality is the most important factor in deciding whether to buy organic tea, among which taste and aroma are important factors in judging the quality of organic tea. In terms of organic tea prices, consumers generally believe that they can accept a 20%-30% increase in organic tea prices on the current basis. 76% of the respondents expressed their willingness to pay 100%-200% higher price for organic tea than ordinary tea.

The survey also shows that manufacturers and distributors of organic tea in the Japanese market prefer national brands. At present, direct sales are the most important sales method for organic tea in the Japanese market, and marketing media mainly focus on health magazines, the Internet, and organic food expos. However, 50% of the respondents still expressed concern about the sales location of organic tea. They reported that it is now difficult to find the sales location of organic tea. In addition, in terms of purchasing channels for organic tea, 44% of the respondents choose to purchase organic tea at tea specialty stores, followed by online shopping. Consumers in tea-producing areas in Japan tend to purchase tea directly from tea companies.

China mainly produces and exports green tea, while consuming countries such as Europe and the United States mainly import black tea. Therefore, China’s tea exports, including organic tea, face structural contradictions between supply and demand.

In terms of tea imports from the six major organic food consuming countries, China’s green tea exports have a relatively high market share, and Japan’s green tea market share has reached over 80%. In the U.S. market, our country’s large-package green tea market share reached 43.7%, and in Germany it was as high as 71.4%. However, green tea, which has a high share of our country’s international market, is not the main imported product of these countries. Among the tea imported into the United States, large-packaged black tea accounts for nearly 50%, but our country’s exports of this type of tea to the United States only account for 13.7%. This is even more prominent in the Japanese market. Although the tea consumption structure and tea culture between Japan and China are relatively close, Japan’s small-package green tea imports only account for 1.6% of total imports, and large-package green tea imports only account for 9% of domestic imports.

Consumption surveys in the European Union, the United States and other places show that they know little about organic green tea, and the main reason for not choosing to buy organic green tea is that they don’t like the taste and aroma of green tea. The taste, especially the bitterness, of existing green tea in China is not acceptable to most Europeans. The survey results also show that the current lack of publicity on the health benefits of green tea has led to low consumer acceptance of green tea, which is also an important reason affecting the expansion of Chinese green tea into the European market.

Mount Emei organic green tea

Although China’s organic tea exports face fierce international competition, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. There is no shortage of high-quality organic green tea in China, such as Mount Emei organic green tea, but the marketing in the international market is insufficient. We believe that with the best quality and hard marketing, Chinese organic green tea will always go to the world.

When spring tea comes, the highly anticipated organic green tea from Mount Emei will be launched soon.
