In terms of per capita tea consumption, Turkey is listed by many media as the country with the highest per capita tea consumption in the world. Turkey’ s per capita tea consumption reaches 4 kilograms per year! Turkey has a history of drinking tea for 100 years. If the Chinese love tea, then the Turks are addicted to tea. More than 90% of the tea consumed in Turkey is black tea.

In 2022, the Quartz website counted the tea drinking volume of 3 billion tea lovers in 160 countries and regions around the world. On this list, Turkey’s per capita tea consumption in a year reached nearly 7 pounds (about 3.2 kilograms). On average, each person drinks 1,250 cups of tea per year, and Turkey consumes as much as 245 million cups of tea every day.

Turkey itself also produces tea, with a tea plantation area of 830,000 hectares. In the mountains near Georgia, a million people make their living from the tea industry. The annual tea production is about 253 tons, mainly black tea. It is the fourth largest tea producer in the world after China, India and Kenya.

Before the 20th century, there were no large-scale tea tree planting areas in Turkey. At that time, Turks rarely drank tea, which is in sharp contrast to now.
